At the American Liver Disease Research Conference in Boston, researchers at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in the United States said they used human stem cells to develop a miniature version of the human liver for the first time in the laboratory. The team of Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Professor Shay Sokol used human stem cells to create the miniature liver, which forms a new liver tissue on a "stent" that is made from the liver of an animal.
The researchers first removed the cells from the animal's liver, leaving only the collagen framework that supports cell growth and a tiny network of blood vessels. The new stem cells, i.e., immature human liver cells and endothelial cells (mainly used to form the inner wall of the blood vessel), are then gradually filled into the "scaffold". Subsequently, the entire frame is moved into a bioreactor and the cells are cultured using a mixture of nutrients and oxygen. A week later observations showed that the cells grew very well and even showed many real human liver functions.
Mark Seuss, a professor of hepatology at Imperial College, London, also praised the study: "Researchers overcome the major technical obstacles in making artificial livers and create functional human livers in a 'natural' liver tissue.
