Figure 1 Hercules MCU security features detect random failures
Texas Instruments (TI) announced in Beijing on September 8 that it will launch the Hercules Secure MCU platform. Hercules is the son of Zeus, the god of the universe in Greek mythology. Hercules is named after TI to highlight the safety and reliability of the platform.
The platform includes three ARM Cortex-based MCU families: the Hercules RM4x/TMS570/TMS470M, a total of 34 products. The first two series are based on three lock-step dual floating-point Cortex-R4F cores in a 65nm CMOS process; the latter are based on an M3 core.
The Hercules RM4x and TMS570 provide hardware security features to monitor for random failures and to avoid system errors (see Figure 1). The red part of the figure indicates that security is automatic detection and the blue part indicates that security is user-selectable non-automatic detection.
The RM4x and TMS570 series operate at 220 MHz and 180 MHz, respectively. Its main features are: support for the highest level of SIL-3 safety standards of IEC 61508; support single-precision and double-precision floating-point math, can perform complex math operations; provide Ethernet, CAN interface; 3MB flash memory and 256KB RAM.
The difference is that the RM4x series also supports the ongoing global medical standard system ISO 13849; it provides a USB interface; it is suitable for industrial automation, servo drives and medical instrumentation applications. The TMS570 Series also supports ISO 26262's highest level of ASIL-D safety standards and AEC-Q100 standards; operating temperature is -40 to 125 ° C; FlexRay interface is available; suitable for railway, aerospace and automotive applications.
Wu Jianhong, MCU Business Development Manager of TI's China Semiconductor Division, said: "The ISO26262 standard was originally requested by many European and American automotive customers. Many Chinese customers are now demanding this safety standard when developing products."
The TMS470M series operates at 80MHz and supports the IEC 61508 system safety standard. It complies with the AEC-Q100 standard and meets the requirements of automotive applications. It provides CAN and LIN bus interfaces. 320 to 640KB of flash memory and 16 to 48KB of RAM for low-cost applications in automobiles.
The Hercules Development Kit has all the hardware and software needed to get up and running quickly, including the Code Composer Studio v4 integrated development environment, the HALCoGen peripheral configuration tool, and more.
